iPhones are likely to become a must-have executive toy when they become legally available in the Middle East.
Apple's latest must-have gadget, the iPhone, has made it to the UAE. But only grey market retailers can sell it, and you will need to pay 500 UAE dirhams ($136) to an illegal hacker to make it work with an Etisalat or Du sim card.

Not true!!
i'm willing to do it for 400 Wink that to without a hardware mod
hehe...but on a serious note i got one to work (not discussing the method here) on etisalat. The only hitch is the internet / youtube addon. Ill be working on that come sunday. Lets c

Ps. Anyone will to spend that much money on a phone that lacks most "normal" phone features, should be able to spend 400 easily.    : D      : - D      ; - D      ; -  P    and finally this smiley for the smiley count per post =   _ | _

Apple's Iphone usage by country...interesting to note UAE is featured in top 25, considering the phone isn't even officially released yet. It can now easily be found at retailers on the streets of Bur Dubai for abt AED 2,500.

2500 is expensive, considering the fact that Apple is selling it for $399.

2500 is expensive, considering the fact that Apple is selling it for $399.

If you haggle, you might get the seller to axe a couple of hundred. Seriously though, and if I'm not mistaken about it, the $399 price tag is conditional to an exclusive one year contract with AT&T. Buying it for the higher price means you get to choose your service provided. The UAE does not follow such a method, except now with the Blackberry. If you look at the new promotions, you can get the Curve 8300 for 1800 if you buy the optional data plan from Etisalat. If you don't you pay a higher price of AED 2100. Being independent is expensive here.

The most overhyped technological piece of excrement in recent memory... And I'm an Apple fan. It's really nothing more than a fashion accessory -- especially in Dubai's monstrously superficial "culture".

Smiley i agree with oddball
as my cuz put it...."one of the most lo-tech devices around"
thats sad considering how well done the apple iphone's interface is. They could have easily added some goodies...but knowing apple, it will be in a more expensive not so worthy update coming soon.

The 16GB is almost out btw.

any idea how to get an officially unlocked iPhone 4 on the release date (24 june) or at least the end of this month?

"they" say iPhone 4 will be available in the UAE by the end of NEXT month, any idea if retailers will get it much sooner than that?

are these ppl reliable?

By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher

But it's very unlike Apple to rush a product, it's very Microsoft-ish if you ask me! The speculated price of the iPhone 4 is around AED 6000 according to Dubai Eye, it's cheaper to buy one in the US/UK, get it cracked...and even if you get it bricked once, get another. It's still cheap!
