NPR is running a series called
50 Great Voices. The idea is that throughout this year on a weekly basis they will feature a profile of a singer that has left its mark on the international arena and is considered a great voice. The voices are chosen by panelists and my understanding is that names are may be suggested by audience as well. I heard a segment were they said how they were debating choosing between Asha Bhosle or Lata Mangeshkar. The names that are chosen so far:
1. Iggy Pop
2. Ahmad Zahir
3. Mahalia Jackson
4. Maria Callas
5. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
6. Asha Bhosle
7. Elis Regina
8. Umm Kulthum
9. Jackie Wilson
10. Ella Fitzgerald
It will be interesting to keep and eye on the names they'll come up with in the coming weeks.
