Trainwreck: My Life as an Idoit (Williams, 2007)IMDB Link“Trainwreck” is one of those small movies that poke out their head among millions of others films for a few seconds and then they are gone, swimming among never to be seen or heard again, occasionally someone like me notices the movie while reading about another movie while browsing through a site while etc etc. Sometimes these kinds of movies prove to be a great surprise when you watch it, most often there is a reason for sinking into obscurity, and other times, like with “Trainwreck”, it is neither extreme.
Film is based on a book which was based on the author’s life. The IMDB plot-outline explains it best,
“A dramatic comedy about a self-induced attention-deficit disordered, learning disabled, Tourette's syndrome suffering, balance impaired, ex-alcoholic young man from the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the gold-digging girl who inspires him to try to get it together“. Mainly works because the main in the plot outline is played by Seann William Scott, someone who I always thought was a bit underrated. He’s always been funny to watch and I have always felt that he made bad movies slightly more tolerable. In a movie like this, so much relies on the lead actor, because watching a movie about a “self-induced attention-deficit disordered, learning disabled, Tourette's syndrome suffering, balance impaired, ex-alcoholic young man” could get obnoxious after a few minutes, but Scott is able to make you enjoy watching him, without making him TOO sympathetic. That would have harmed the movie, because as viewers we have to realize that the character’s shitty life is mainly because of the guy’s own outlook, but if we fault him too much, then we can’t like him enough to want to watch him try to improve. Scott is able to both make us fault him, but still cheer him on.
Not the best of materials, but Scott really does a better than expected job with it.
