That just shows you I suck at math.

Well, since I am on vacation from filmmaking, you could say I have time to get Project Best Films of the Decade going...

I think we can all chip in this project, and since you have some time in your hand you should be the editor (I proposed Mad or Shariq because they are always around and they know their shit). May be we all can throw some names, say 10-20 each. You sift through them, make a draft with the names that are mentioned the most, put them in a list and ask for grades, then rank them accordingly. Then you can assign each "willing" member with writing a small piece about each film. What do you think guys?Does this sound interesting or should we just leave the heavy lifting for AK?

AV Club List for Best Worst films of The 00's

The list on the site comes complete with a small essay for each film and the trailer, so you might wanna check it out on the AV Club link above. Here is the list

15. The Perfect Man (2005)
14. Dragon Wars (2007)
13. Basic Instinct 2 (2006)
12. Boat Trip (2003)
11. Glitter (2001)
10. Perfect Stranger (2007)
9. The Butterfly Effect (2004)
8. Crossroads (2002)
7. Battlefield Earth (2000)
6. The Happening (2008)
5. From Justin To Kelly (2003)
4. Dreamcatcher (2003)
3. Alone In The Dark (2005)
2. The Wicker Man (2006)
1. The Room (2003)

On a personal note, I enjoyed number The Butterfly Effect and number Dreamcatcher very much. The two the I despise the most are Battlefield Earth and The Wicker Man.

Here is how we will do it. A bit different from how we always we do list. It will sound a bit complicated, but I will tell you my reasoning.

We will assign a certain number of points to certain of our members. The member will then assign these points to films he chooses. We then add up the points and see which films will come up on top.

Okay, that makes no sense, but I'll try to explain.

Lets say I am given 20 points. I can choose 20 films and give them each 1 point. This means each of these films will have 1 point each. However, if I think certain films deserve more, I could always choose 19 films and give one of them 2 points (which comes to again 20 points). Or I could choose 10 films, and give one 10 points, another 3, and so on.

The advantage to this is if we want to push a certain film, we can use up more of our points on it, but at the same time, this leaves us less points for using for other films, so we have to think hard on it.

Members will not get the same amount of points. For example, Fizz and AK will get more points due to their knowledge of more films than the others, so they should have more weight in the choosing of films. I can decide this at a later stage.

This will be round one. There will be another round. This will be done after we add up the points for the films. In the second round, I will again give the members some more points (but these will be much less, maybe a 10% of the first points). The users can then use these points to MINUS the points from the films. This means that if a member REALLY hates a film that was chosen by another member, he can use his points to deduct the points.

Can everyone under this?

The reason I want to try something like this, because I want to be able to create a more unique and dynamic choosing of films. If a member is REALLY passionate about a film, he can try to push it forward, but then he will be handicapped about pushing other films.

Whether we do this or not, we have to dedicate a week for brainstorming. This is for users to throw out as many best films they can think about, even if it comes to 100-200 films. Because we want us to look at them and go, "oh shit, I forgot that!"

I think I get it Mad. However, this should gather momentum pretty fast because we only have a few weeks, and we should have this over with before the year/decade's end. So if everybody is on board we should start working on it like yesterday.

We dont need to do this before the year ends. We always do our Top-10 annual lists by Jan or Feb, if i am not mistaken, to give us time to see some films that are released in Dec, but take a while to reach here.

True, but keeping momentum/interest should play a role. People get bored easily.

By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher

Mad, I like your idea as an idea. But I have no idea if it will work, or how.

We should definitely start with the brainstorming though. Let's one of us keep editing the TOP post to add movie names alphabetically, with a link to the IMDb page.

First of all, I think Mad's idea of awarding points to members and films selections is an interesting one.

Second: this is WearetheMovies.com -- we do EVERYTHING differently! Which means we make our lists using our own (be it ridiculous or genius) system and...next point:

We dont need to do this before the year ends. We always do our Top-10 annual lists by Jan or Feb, if i am not mistaken, to give us time to see some films that are released in Dec, but take a while to reach here.

I am completely in agreement with this. Personally I don't care when the list is made (as long as it is made). For me, I want to take the time to create my *personal* Best of the Decade list and do it in a way that is not rushed. It is like giving birth to a baby.

Most importantly, this project can allow us, as a film community, to discover and reconsider each film selection. Some one (or may be 2 people) can keep prompting the group to continue forward until our collective WM list is done.

Well AK that is fine if you plan on doing it yourself, then you can take your sweet time "giving birth" or whatever you have in mind. But if you want a community effort, you have to make a plan and stick to it, otherwise you will be back in the States and you will have more important and grandiose things to do with you time, and guess what, Mad is already bored just discussing it. So cut the crap and lead!

How come no one brought this up earlier?

This has been raging online on many sites for weeks now. The two personal favourite lists compiled so far (probably because I generally agree with them) are:

1 -  Time Online (Excellent film for the top spot!)
2 - The AV Club
