The Hunt for Gollum (Bouchard, 2009)

The Hunt for Gollum is a prequel of sorts to the Fellowship of the Ring. It is a 35 minutes short film that is "made by fans for fans". It is not based on any of the events in the book.

The story is simple, after the news of the rising of Sauron's army, Gandalf and Strider are concerned that Gollum might tell the enemies about the Ring's whereabouts. Therefore, Strider goes East in a dangerous journey to hunt down the wretched creature.

For a film made by fans without any commercial purposes, I'd say it's a very impressive effort. It is well made, the story is compelling, and the production values are really good. I give it 3.5/5.

Last year, some fans got together to make a movie. Based on the 27years of absence between Bilbo's parting from Bag End and Gandalf's return to warn Frodo of the One Ring, the 40-minute movie explores those years that Gandalf with the help of his ranger friend Strider spends tracking, capturing and interrogating Gollum.

Made on a shoe-string budget for a free internet release and no intention of profit, the movie is now considered one of the best fan-made movies ever made.
