Actually, the quintessential Linkin Park song is this one, which preceded "Crawling". This was them at their rawest, before they sold out to the pop-ish sensibilities of the mainstream. They have never been this heavy since. Shame, really.

By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher

These songs are great thank you for bringing them to my attention. However, as I said earlier, "In The End" speaks to me, that is why I love it so much.

Oddball, commercially successful is not necessarily a bad thing itself. I would think that every independent band out there is dreaming about making it big. Not everyone compromise his or her artistic integrity when they become a household name.

No I didn't. That would be sweet, unfortunately I can not visit at that date.

The only concerte I've ever attended was one for Shaggy like 7 years ago in Dubai. It was a competition my brother won from Showtime. We had so much fun then.

Hello boys, today on the shuffle I present to you Fairouz, the greatest Arabic singer of all time in my opinion. Her voice is an instrument itself, and in the time of war she was the hopeful voice of Lebanon. For 50 years and more, she still a pillar of art and music for Lebanon and the Arab world.

I chose for you this song Kifak Inta "How are You?". It is written by her son Ziad Al-Rahbani a flakey/brilliant artist who changed his mother singing style quite a bit. This is not a classic song of Fairouz, I chose it because it is personable, simple, and beautiful. Plus the lyrics are translated to English. I hope you will like it

I love Fairuz. I mean absolutely LOVE her music. It is pretty much indescribable, almost incredible. "Kifak Inta" is a very good song out of her vast collection, but nothing, nothing comes close to "Ya Tair". That song sends me to some place....

Good pick ayaa...great pick!

I am really surprised that you know Fairouz let alone love her this much. I obviously underestimated you guys. Silly me I thought I will be introducing you to this great artist.

"Ya Tair" is a marvelous song full of anguish and longing for the loved one who is far away, and I absolutely adore it. Whenever I hear it I get goose pumps. I only choose Kifak Inta because I thought it was a more accessible song. I can go on and on talking about this great singer, the one we call "Our Ambassador to the Stars", but we will safe this conversation for some other time, meanwhile enjoy Ya Tair:

I was introduced to Fairuz by a friend and immediately fell in love. I even took the trouble of acquiring the film Safar Barlik, that used Ya Tair on its soundtrack. Unfortunately I've never been able to see it because I don't have the subtitles...and my Arabic is like my Latin Smiley

You don't need to watch her films, she is a stiff actress, but a marvelous singer, one of a kind.
Just listen to whatever song of hers you can hear and she will take places even if you don't understand a word of what she sings.

As far as classic Arab singers go, Fairuz is an institution.

Back in the old days in Iraq, Baghdad's Radio 1 used to play 1 or 2 songs of hers early in the morning (around 07:00-7:30) on a daily basis, so you would catch her on the way to school in your dad's car or on the school bus, and this would follow you to college while you're driving there yourself, or (if you're an early bird), enjoy her ethereal voice in the University cafeteria while you're waiting for the first lecture to start. Spanning all these years, the "Fairuz in the morning" radio ritual became such an intrinsic part of Iraqi culture, that everyone who lived during that time had formed an unmistakable mental association between Fairuz's voice and the elements that define morning time; the way the sun casts shadows while it's just above eye-level, the cool refreshing winter breeze, the smell of freshly bloomed orange trees in spring, the distant din of morning traffic, and the odd alley cat strolling lazily from behind a trash bin, stretching itself while it eyes you cautiously as you walk by towards the bus stop.

Nostalgia is such a bittersweet feeling.

yeah i was having breakfast a few weeks ago where they were playing Fairuz,i started asking myself why Radio stations player her songs early in the morning? hehe i guess it's something you can't explain..

i like Fairuz but i haven't listened to many songs of her,"salony alnas" is my favorite.her lyrics are so deep, let's not forget she said "we were going up in that heat and we were feeling hot, there was one eating lettuce, and one eating figs" lol

It was a ritual everywhere in the Arab World I think, I too remember associating her voice with morning back in the day before even falling in love with her. The perfect morning song for Fairouz is "Dakhlak Ya Tair Alwerwar". That is what is printed in my memory the most.

Nostalgia is such a bittersweet feeling.

Amen for that!!

Oddy, thats a fantastic description of both a great morning and the effects of Fairuz's song.

Here is the thing - there is a UAE radio station (one of the Arabic ones) that plays her songs each morning from 7 to 8 or so. I can't remember what frequency its on, because I never saved it, but I've heard it more than once and then forgot about it. Your post just reminded me about it. Do you know which one it might be? (It's on FM, not AM).
