I know we compiled our Most Anticipated Films of 2009, but somehow this slipped through the cracks.

Michael Haneke is my hero, and I am ashamed to have overlooked this. (Punish me, Haneke.)

White Ribbon will be competing at Cannes, and is shot in glorious black-and-white! Here's the plot:

Quote from: IMDb
Strange events happen at a rural school in the north of Germany during the year 1913, which seem to be ritual punishment. Does this affect the school system, and how does the school have an influence on fascism?

I was nodding my head in somber agreement, thinking "Empire has put a really respectable selection of films, and I may reconsider my opinion of this magazine being toilet paper" -- that is, until I got to film #17.

Well AK, now you are just  being unreasonable. If you didn't like one film out of 17 film that doesn't mean the list is bad. Mathematically that is less than 6% "bad" by AK scale.
I see many interesting films. I for one am curious to see Thirst, White Ribbon, Agora, Up!, and of course the AWESOME Drag Me To Hell, which looks just HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!!

Thanks for the bringing this up. Now, lets all collectively use our powers of subliminal influencing to get DIFF to play this in December.

You believed in the truth.

Quote from: BBC News
Austrian film takes Cannes honour
Austrian film The White Ribbon has won the Palme d'Or, the main prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Director Michael Haneke's work saw off competition from past winners including Britain's Ken Loach and Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

One of its stars, Austrian Christoph Waltz, won best actor for his portrayal of an SS officer.

Charlotte Gainsbourg was named best actress for her role in Lars Von Trier's controversial film Antichrist.

The Danish film-maker's work did not go down well due to its brutal and frank scenes of domestic violence.

Second honour

Gainsbourg, the 37-year-old daughter of French musician Serge, said she wanted to share her honour with Von Trier, calling the making of the movie "the most intense, the most painful, and most exciting experience of my life".

The prize for best director was awarded to Brilliante Mendoza of the Philippines for his dark film Kintay.

Charlotte Gainsbourg AK's Wife won for her gritty performance

British film-maker Andrea Arnold jointly won the jury prize for her film Fish Tank, the second time she has won the Cannes honour.

South Korean director Park Chan-Wook shared the prize with Arnold for Thirst, about a priest-turned-vampire.

Haneke's film, shot in black and white, studies the chilling, malicious atmosphere gripping a German village on the eve of World War I.

Other award winners included Portugal's Joao Salaviza for best short film and Chinese writer Feng Mai for best screenplay.

The award ceremony brings the Cannes Film Festival to a close, which has attracted film-making talent from Hollywood and around the world.

One of the biggest media draws was the red carpet appearance of Brad Pitt - star of Inglourious Basterds - along with his actress wife Angelina Jolie.

They picked it up as a pre-sale, before Cannes even started. They also acquired Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky in a similar way. Apparently, Sony Pictures Classics wants a higher profile this year. On a related note, IFC both the US rights for Antichrist despite the bad reaction from the critics; the film's length will be edited before release.

That win makes me immensely happy - and I can't wait for December, when hopefully we get to see it. I've already gotten hold of the movies I haven't seen in Haneke's body of work and will be watching it over the next few weeks.
