Before Peter Jackson made one of the greatest trilogy that anyone has seen he did this campy little ghost stories. Though not as funny as Slither but at par on the campiness.

With help from Robert Zemekis, Peter Jackson has created one hell of a campy yet scary movie. Special effects are below par when comparing them with Ghostbusters and Back to the Future but it is story and acting that scores heavy points. The cast is great especially Michael J Fox but it is the hilarious Jeffrey Combs steals every scene he is in as a psychotic FBI investigator.

All in all, a unique film that really only falls apart towards the end, when it resorts to the typical slasher ending with plot twists. Apart from the end, it's sure to keep you entertained throughout!

"There's this whole school of thought that movies are always so great when you're 10 or 12 years old, and the reality of it is, when you're 10 or 12 years old, you've only seen 100 stories. By the time you get to be 25, you've seen 3,000. You've seen every permutation of every dramatic arc. And when somebody takes that and stands it on its head, that can be exciting." David Fincher

Frighteners, in contrast with Braindead, has a coherent and satisfying plot. It plays it straight and it is not campy at all. Acting is good and Michael J. Fox is as charming as ever playing the cynical small time con artist. The story takes off right away without really any exposition. Two parallel stories run for 2/3 of the film and it only gels at the final climax which makes for a very good storytelling. The effects are CGI verses the practical effects of Braindead, and considering the film came out 13 years ago in the mid 90's, they look really decent.

Everything about the film from technical and performance point of view is really good, yet there is something about the story, as cute and well constructed as it is, that makes it ultimately forgettable. That is why this film is kinda lost in Peter Jackson's resume. I fairly enjoyed it and I give it 3/5
